Chicago – September 01, 2025

The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) has officially declared that Israel’s actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide, marking a significant statement from leading experts in international law. In a resolution passed Monday, the 500-member IAGS body stated that Israel’s policies and military actions align with the criteria for genocide outlined in the 1948 United Nations Convention.

The resolution garnered strong support, with 86% of members voting in favor. It called on Israel to cease “deliberate attacks on civilians, including children; starvation; deprivation of humanitarian aid, water, fuel, and other essentials; sexual and reproductive violence; and forced displacement.”

Ismail al-Thawabta, head of Gaza’s Government Media Office, praised the resolution, stating that it strengthens the documented evidence already presented in international courts. He emphasized that the declaration places a “legal and moral obligation” on the international community to act swiftly to protect civilians and hold Israeli leaders accountable for their actions.
