Chicago – April 17, 2025

During a debate on Wednesday night, Prime Minister candidate Mark Carney said that President Donald Trump is the biggest challenge Canada is facing. Carney made this statement in response to his conservative opponent, Pierre Poilievre, who had accused Carney of being too similar to the former Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau. Carney said the election is about choosing who will be strong enough to face Trump.

Carney, who recently won a landslide election within his Liberal Party, is now considered the top candidate to become Canada’s next prime minister in the upcoming nationwide election. However, recent polls suggest the race is getting closer.

Before Trudeau stepped down earlier this year, many believed the Liberal Party would struggle in the next election against Poilievre’s Conservative Party. But President Trump’s actions, including the trade war with the U.S. and threats to make Canada the 51st state, have caused more people to support Carney and the Liberal Party again.

Reports say Carney is now seen as the best candidate to handle tough negotiations with the U.S. and deal with the tariffs Trump put in place this year.
