Mexico has agreed to send 10,000 troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in exchange for a one-month delay on President Donald Trump’s planned tariffs. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum shared the news on social media early Monday, just hours before the tariffs were set to begin.
Sheinbaum and Trump spoke earlier in the day and decided that Mexico would increase its efforts to stop drug trafficking into the U.S. In return, the U.S. will work harder to prevent firearms from being smuggled into Mexico.
The two leaders also started talks on broader trade and security issues. Trump confirmed the agreement on his Truth Social account, describing his conversation with Sheinbaum as “very friendly.”
This deal comes after Trump’s announcement of 25% tariffs on both Mexico and Canada and 10% tariffs on China. While Trump said he spoke to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday, no deal was reached. The tariffs are still set to go into effect at midnight on Tuesday unless a new agreement is made.
The delay gives both countries time to discuss important issues that affect their trade and security, helping to avoid the immediate economic impact of the tariffs.
