President-elect Donald Trump has stated he plans to declare a national emergency to carry out mass deportations using military resources. On Monday, Trump reposted a claim by conservative activist Tom Fitton that he is ready to use military assets for a large-scale deportation program, commenting, “TRUE!!!”
During his campaign, Trump often spoke of removing immigrants who have broken U.S. laws. However, experts note that border security and deportation efforts are separate issues. Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, a senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, said, “They are two different topics.”
Historically, the U.S. military has supported border enforcement, but using it as a domestic police force is legally restricted. During his first term, Trump declared a national emergency to redirect military construction funds for border wall projects. His administration built over 400 miles of fencing, much of it replacing older structures.
Trump’s spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, said voters gave him a clear mandate to fulfill his campaign promises, including deporting migrant criminals. “He will deliver,” she added.
While Trump’s approach stirs controversy, it signals a strong commitment to immigration policies that were central to his campaign. Critics, however, question the legality and practicality of such plans.
