The world was stunned on Wednesday after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a controversial plan to develop the Gaza Strip into a luxury destination and relocate millions of Palestinians.
Trump’s Proposal
During a press conference on Tuesday, standing beside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Trump revealed his vision of turning Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East.” He also refused to rule out U.S. military intervention, stating that Washington “will take over the Gaza Strip.”
White House Response
On Wednesday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt tried to calm concerns, saying the president had not committed to sending troops or funding the reconstruction. However, her statement did little to ease global criticism.
Global Reactions
Leaders from across the world quickly rejected Trump’s proposal.
- Saudi Arabia firmly opposed the plan, saying there would be no diplomatic ties with Israel without a two-state solution.
- The UAE, which previously signed the Abraham Accords, issued a strong statement rejecting any violation of Palestinian rights or displacement.
- Iran made it clear that it opposed any forced removal of Palestinians.
- The UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer broke from Trump’s stance, saying Palestinians “must be allowed home.”
- Russia, through Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, reaffirmed its support for a two-state solution.
- France warned that ignoring a two-state solution could destabilize the entire region.
- China emphasized that “Palestinians governing Palestine” should be the guiding principle for post-war Gaza.
- Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called Trump’s plan “unacceptable” and warned that excluding Palestinians would lead to more conflict.
Uncertain Future
Trump’s proposal has sparked widespread opposition, with many world leaders insisting on a two-state solution as the only path to lasting peace in the region.
