U.S. officials have asked India to quickly and responsibly handle an investigation into a plot to kill a Sikh activist in the U.S. Last week, an Indian committee came to Washington to talk about their investigation.
This follows a U.S. Justice Department claim that an Indian intelligence officer had planned to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a Sikh who wants independence for Sikhs and holds both U.S. and Canadian citizenship.
A U.S. official, who didn’t share their name, said that the U.S. won’t be happy until India shows real responsibility. The U.S. has formally accused Vikash Yadav, a former Indian spy, of leading this plot in New York City since May 2023.
This situation has made things tense between the U.S. and India, but the U.S. still sees India as a critical partner against China’s growing power.
India calls Sikh separatists like Pannun “terrorists” and sees them as a threat. The Indian embassy in Washington hasn’t commented on this yet.
