Masoud Pezeshkian, a moderate candidate who wants to open Iran to the world, decisively won the presidential run-off election. He will be Iran’s ninth elected president. Pezeshkian received 53.7% of the votes, 16.3 million out of more than 30 million ballots. His opponent, Saeed Jalili, got 44.3%, or 13.5 million votes.
On Saturday, Pezeshkian acknowledged the challenges ahead but promised to support all Iranians. He said, “I extend my hand towards you and swear on my honour that I will not leave you alone on this path. Don’t leave me alone.”
World leaders congratulated Pezeshkian on his victory, recognizing his commitment to opening Iran to the world. Pezeshkian’s win marks a significant step for Iran, as many hope for positive changes and better relations with other countries.
