On Tuesday afternoon, terrorists opened fire at a famous meadow near Pahalgam in Kashmir, killing 26 people, mostly tourists. This is the deadliest attack in the region since the Pulwama attack in 2019.
The victims included two foreigners and two locals. Authorities are still working to confirm the exact number of casualties. Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, called the attack “much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years.”
The attack took place around 3 p.m. at Baisaran. Terrorists entered the area and began shooting at people enjoying the day, including those eating, riding ponies, or having picnics. At least 20 people were also injured in the attack.
The attack happened while U.S. Vice President JD Vance was visiting India, and the tourist season was just starting to pick up. Union Home Minister Amit Shah briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently visiting Saudi Arabia. Amit Shah then left for Srinagar to hold a security meeting.
In response, Prime Minister Modi condemned the attack, offering condolences to the families of the victims and wishing for a quick recovery for the injured. He also promised that the attackers would be brought to justice and that the fight against terrorism would continue strongly.
