President Trump announced on Thursday that he is nominating his national security adviser, Mike Waltz, to be the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. This is the first major change in his top team since starting his second term.
Trump shared the news on social media and said that Marco Rubio, who is already Secretary of State, will temporarily take on the role of national security adviser. Waltz will need to be approved by the U.S. Senate before officially taking the UN position. Waltz expressed his gratitude on social media, saying he is “deeply honored” to continue serving President Trump and the country.
The UN ambassador position has been empty since Trump asked Rep. Elise Stefanik to stay in Congress to help Republicans maintain their majority in the House of Representatives.
Waltz has faced pressure since March when he accidentally invited a journalist into a private group chat with top officials discussing military plans. Trump initially defended Waltz, calling the incident a “glitch” and praised him for working hard for the nation’s interests.
In an interview with The Atlantic last week, Trump said that Waltz is fine and joked that people should avoid using the messaging app Signal, which was involved in the incident.
Despite this, Trump has relied on other key advisors for national security issues, including the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, and talks with Iran. The announcement came after rumors about Waltz leaving his position and while Rubio’s spokeswoman was talking to reporters at the State Department.
