India’s Muslim Population: States with the Highest Numbers
India, a country of diverse cultures and religions, is home to one of the world’s largest Muslim populations. Muslims make up about 14.2% of India’s population (Census 2011). Here’s a look at the Indian states with the largest Muslim communities.

Uttar Pradesh
The most populous state in India, Uttar Pradesh has over 38 million Muslims, making up around 19.26% of its population. Cities like Lucknow, Aligarh, and Varanasi have notable Muslim populations. The state’s Islamic heritage is reflected in iconic landmarks like the Taj Mahal and Bara Imambara.

West Bengal
Muslims comprise about 27% of West Bengal’s population, totaling over 24 million people. Districts such as Murshidabad, Malda, and North 24 Parganas have the highest concentrations. Kolkata, the capital, is a cultural melting pot with a significant Muslim presence.

Bihar
With around 17 million Muslims (16.87% of the population), Bihar’s key Muslim-majority areas include Kishanganj, Araria, and Purnia. The state has a strong Islamic legacy, including historical sites like the tomb of Sher Shah Suri in Sasaram.

Maharashtra
Maharashtra has over 12 million Muslims, comprising about 11.54% of its population. Mumbai, its capital, hosts a vibrant Muslim community and landmarks like the Haji Ali Dargah. The community contributes actively to the city’s cultural and economic life.

Assam
Assam has a 34.22% Muslim population, amounting to over 10 million people. Districts such as Dhubri, Barpeta, and Goalpara have significant Muslim communities. The culture blends Assamese and Bengali influences, making it unique within India.

Kerala
Kerala’s Muslims make up about 26.56% of the population, with over 8 million residents. The districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Kannur are major centers. Known for high literacy and social development, the Muslim community plays a vital role in the state’s progress.

Jammu and Kashmir
This union territory has the highest percentage of Muslims in India at 68.31%, totaling more than 8.5 million people. The region is famed for its scenic beauty and rich Muslim heritage in arts, crafts, and cuisine.
