The U.S. government might send migrants to Libya for the first time this week, according to three American officials. This would be part of President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies. Two of the officials said the military could fly the migrants to the North African country as early as Wednesday. However, the plan could still change.
It is not clear how many people might be sent or which countries they are from. One family told Reuters that their relative from Mexico had been asked to sign papers to allow deportation to Libya.
When reporters asked President Trump about the plan, he said he didn’t know anything about it. “You’ll have to ask Homeland Security,” he said from the Oval Office.
The Pentagon told reporters to contact the White House. The White House and the Department of Homeland Security didn’t respond to questions. A State Department spokesperson said they don’t talk about private talks with other governments.
On Wednesday, Libya’s Government of National Unity said it does not agree with the U.S. sending migrants there without asking first. They also said the U.S. had not talked to them about taking in any migrants.
