President Donald Trump said he hopes India and Pakistan will stop fighting and said he’s willing to help both countries make peace. This came after India launched airstrikes on Pakistan early Wednesday.
India’s Defense Ministry said it attacked at least nine places where it believes terrorist attacks against India were being planned. Pakistan said the strikes killed 26 people, including women and children, and called it an “act of war.”
“It’s terrible,” President Trump told reporters. “I get along with both. I want to see them stop. They’ve been going back and forth, and I hope they can end it. If I can help, I will.”
Tensions between the two countries got worse in April after a gunman killed 26 people, mostly Indian tourists, in the part of Kashmir controlled by India. India blamed Pakistan for the attack. A group linked to Pakistan later said it was behind the attack.
After India’s airstrikes on Wednesday, Pakistan said it shot down five Indian fighter jets in response. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the country has the right to defend itself and will continue to respond strongly.
