In recent times, Indian Muslim communities have faced increasing hostility, not only from fringe groups but also through aggressive rhetoric by some Indian news anchors who have pressured Muslims to chant slogans like “Pakistan Murdabad” and “Jai Shri Ram” under duress. A notable incident involved a Muslim man who was harassed by a self-proclaimed anchor and Hindu vigilantes, demanding he chant slogans against Muslims in Pakistan. The man courageously refused, stating, “Whether it’s a Muslim from Pakistan or Bangladesh, we love them just as much as we love the Muslims here,” emphasizing unity and respect for all Indians regardless of religion or nationality.
This episode reflects a broader pattern of intolerance and violence against Muslims in India. Numerous reports document physical assaults, harassment, and even killings targeting Muslims solely for their faith. For example, in March 2025, two Muslim brothers, Niyaz and Khurshid Ahmed, were brutally attacked in Varanasi while being forced to chant “Jai Shri Ram,” leaving one unconscious and both severely injured. Similarly, Abdul Wakil, a Muslim government employee in Telangana, was viciously assaulted by members of a right-wing group for carrying files wrapped in saffron cloth, an incident that led to arrests but highlighted growing communal tensions.
One of the most tragic cases is that of Tabrez Ansari, a Muslim man who died in 2019 after being lynched by a mob in Jharkhand on suspicion of theft, a brutal act fueled by religious hatred. Such incidents underscore the dangerous climate of Islamophobia and communal violence that persists in parts of India.
These acts of violence and intimidation, often accompanied by forced chanting of slogans designed to humiliate, reveal a disturbing trend of religious intolerance. Yet, voices like the Muslim man who refused to hate and instead called for unity demonstrate resilience and hope for communal harmony. It is imperative for Indian society and authorities to uphold justice, protect minorities, and foster an environment of respect and coexistence for all citizens.
