Canada will officially recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations meeting in September, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Wednesday. This move puts more pressure on Israel as the situation in Gaza worsens, with people facing severe starvation.
This announcement follows similar moves by other countries. Last week, France said it would recognize a Palestinian state, and just a day before Canada’s announcement, Britain said it would do the same if fighting in Gaza continues until September’s U.N. General Assembly meeting.
Carney told reporters that the situation in Gaza, including the hunger crisis, makes it clear that the chance for a Palestinian state is becoming more distant. He also criticized the Israeli government for allowing the crisis to happen.
Canada’s decision is partly based on the Palestinian Authority’s promises to reform its government and hold elections in 2026, where Hamas, a Palestinian militant group, would not be allowed to participate.
This move by Canada, along with other countries, shows the growing anger around the world over Israel’s actions in Gaza, where food and aid have been restricted. A global hunger monitor has warned that Gaza could face a severe famine soon.
