More than 365 people were arrested in London during a protest against Britain’s decision to ban the group Palestine Action, the Metropolitan Police said.
The protesters, some wearing black and white Palestinian scarves and holding Palestinian flags, chanted “hands off Gaza” and carried signs that read “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.” Video footage from Reuters showed the crowd gathered in Parliament Square, near the Houses of Parliament, as they were carried away by police officers. The protesters shouted “shame on you” at the police.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the police confirmed that 365 people had been arrested for supporting a banned organization. Additionally, seven people were arrested for other crimes, including five for assaulting police officers. Fortunately, no officers were seriously injured.
In July, British lawmakers made Palestine Action illegal under anti-terrorism laws after some of its members broke into a Royal Air Force base and damaged planes in protest against Britain’s support for Israel. The ban means that anyone who is a member of Palestine Action can face up to 14 years in prison.
Recently, Huda Ammori, one of the group’s co-founders, was allowed to challenge the ban in court.
