In a major diplomatic spat, the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has publicly blasted Australia’s leader, calling him a traitor. The fight started after Australia decided to officially recognize a Palestinian state. In response, Israel kicked out some Australian diplomats and canceled a visa for an Israeli lawmaker who was planning to visit Australia. Netanyahu posted on social media that history will see Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as a “weak politician” who betrayed Israel and turned his back on Australian Jews.
The situation is especially tense because of the ongoing war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas. Australia’s Jewish community has reported a big increase in antisemitic attacks since the war began. The Israeli lawmaker whose visa was canceled was supposed to meet with that community. Australia’s Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, fired back, calling Israel’s actions an “unjustified reaction.” She warned that Netanyahu’s government is only making Israel more isolated from the rest of the world.
This war of words is causing a serious rift between the two countries. The argument over recognizing a Palestinian state is at the center of the problem, and both sides are refusing to back down. It’s unclear what will happen next or how this will affect the relationship between Israel and Australia going forward.
