Chicago – June 21, 2026

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is contemplating his political future as intense pressure to quit mounts within his own Labour Party, with speculation increasing that he may announce a resignation timeline this Monday.

The crisis intensified after rival Andy Burnham secured a decisive by-election victory in Makerfield, doubling Labour’s majority and positioning himself to challenge Starmer for the party leadership. Cabinet minister Peter Kyle, a close ally, stated Starmer is “mindful of the interests of the country” while reflecting on “political realities”.

Key cabinet figures, including Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, are urging Starmer to establish a departure timeline following Burnham’s win. The Observer reported Sunday that Starmer is “expected to resign” Monday, while the Sunday Telegraph indicated he is “ready” to depart.

Starmer has faced escalating demands due to plummeting popularity ratings, policy errors, and scandals. Despite publicly vowing to resist removal efforts, insiders now believe a resignation announcement could emerge Monday, coinciding with Burnham’s official swearing-in as MP. US President Donald Trump also weighed in Sunday, claiming Starmer “will resign”.
