Chicago – September 02, 2025

Belgium announced it will recognize the State of Palestine during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly later this month, joining France, Canada, and other Western nations in a growing diplomatic push for Palestinian statehood. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said the recognition aims to send a strong political signal condemning Israel’s expansion of settlements and military occupations in the West Bank.

The formal recognition will be finalized only when certain conditions are met: the release of all Israeli hostages held in Gaza and Hamas ceasing its governance role in the territory. Alongside recognition, Belgium plans to impose 12 sanctions on Israel, including banning imports from Israeli settlements, reassessing public procurement policies with Israeli companies, and designating extremist Israeli ministers and Hamas leaders persona non grata.

The move has drawn sharp rebuke from some Israeli politicians, who criticized the timing and linked it to political failures within Israel’s government. Belgium’s foreign minister emphasized the measures target Israel’s government and Hamas, aiming to uphold international law and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

This step adds to mounting European support for Palestinian statehood as tensions in the region remain high.
