India has begun the digital rollout of Census 2027, giving citizens a self-enumeration option so they can enter household details online before field officers arrive. The government says the process can be completed through the official portal and mobile-based tools, making participation easier and faster for families across the country.
According to the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, self-enumeration is available for a limited 15-day window before the house-to-house survey phase, and the system supports 16 languages. After online submission, households receive a unique SE ID that must be shared with enumerators during the later field visit.
Officials say the census will be conducted digitally for the first time, with enumerators also using mobile apps to collect data during the housing census and later population enumeration phases. The government has urged residents to include every family member’s details accurately, saying complete data helps improve planning for welfare schemes, infrastructure, schools, hospitals, and other public services.
Public awareness has already shown early results, with the RGI reporting strong uptake of the self-enumeration facility in the first phase. Authorities have encouraged citizens to use only official census channels and avoid misinformation as the exercise expands nationwide.
