Chicago – September 06, 2025
President Donald Trump has escalated his rhetoric against Chicago, threatening “Apocalypse Now”-style action and suggesting large-scale deportation operations to address crime and illegal immigration in the city. This follows Trump’s recent deployments of National Guard troops to other major cities, moves widely criticized as federal overreach by local officials and civil rights organizations.
Truth Social Post Sparks Outrage
On Saturday, Trump posted an AI-generated image on Truth Social parodying the film “Apocalypse Now,” declaring, “I love the smell of deportations in the morning… Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR.” The post was accompanied by references to renaming the Department of Defense. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson denounced the threat, with Pritzker calling the president a “wannabe dictator” and pledging legal resistance.
Preparations and Response
Federal authorities are preparing to use Naval Station Great Lakes as a base for ICE operations, aiming for a month-long crackdown targeting Chicago’s undocumented population—estimated at around 150,000.
Community leaders have organized protests and canceled local celebrations, including parts of Mexican Independence Day events, fearful of abrupt raids and disruptions. Critics argue the threats are more about political intimidation than law enforcement, fueling anxiety among immigrants and local residents.
Trump’s promised “war” on Chicago has intensified the national debate over federal authority, immigration law, and the balance of power between states and Washington
