Chicago – September 18, 2025

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on September 17, 2025, his intent to designate the left-wing anti-fascist movement Antifa as a “terrorist organization.” Speaking on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump described Antifa as a “sick, dangerous, radical left disaster” and a “major terrorist organization.” He also urged that those financing Antifa be thoroughly investigated according to the highest legal standards.

This declaration follows the recent assassination of right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk, which Trump and senior officials have repeatedly attributed to a hostile atmosphere allegedly fueled by left-wing groups. However, no evidence has yet linked the suspect, Tyler Robinson, to Antifa or any organized group.

Antifa is a decentralized ideological movement without formal leadership or a structured hierarchy, largely composed of activists opposing right-wing ideologies. Legal experts have noted that designating Antifa as a terrorist organization poses significant legal challenges, especially given its nature as a loosely connected domestic movement protected under the First Amendment.

The White House is reportedly preparing an executive order addressing political violence and hate speech, signaling a broader crackdown on perceived left-wing extremism.
