Chicago – October 12, 2025
The 2025 Chicago Marathon, drawing over 50,000 runners from more than 100 countries, is unfolding amid heightened tensions due to the Trump administration’s escalated immigration crackdown. Under “Operation Midway Blitz,” federal immigration raids have intensified, and the deployment of Texas National Guard troops to Chicago has further alarmed residents and participants alike.
Many runners, particularly those of Hispanic and other minority backgrounds, are anxious about the potential presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents along the marathon route, which spans 29 neighborhoods including those with large immigrant populations like Pilsen and Little Village. Some athletes plan to carry identification as a precaution, reflecting fears of racial profiling and unwarranted targeting.
Despite these fears, ICE officials have denied plans to conduct enforcement actions aimed at disrupting the marathon, calling such rumors “absurd.” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed solidarity with international participants, specifically encouraging the 3,000 registered runners from Mexico to attend and demonstrate resilience.
Local businesses and officials worry the climate of fear may reduce attendance and economic activity usually generated by this major event, which attracts nearly two million spectators annually. The marathon thus highlights a deep divide between federal immigration policies and community sentiments in Chicago at this time.
