Chicago – December 17, 2025
Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and renowned photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced Tuesday.
Speaking at a press conference, Hochman said the charges include a special circumstance of multiple murders and a special allegation that Reiner used a dangerous and deadly weapon a knife. If convicted, Reiner could face life in prison without the possibility of parole.
“No decision at this point has been made with respect to the death penalty,” Hochman said.
Investigation and Arrest Details
Authorities became aware of the deaths on Sunday after receiving a call from the fire department. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell stated that the cause and time of death have not yet been determined, as officials are still awaiting findings from the coroner’s office.
Alan Hamilton, deputy chief of the Los Angeles Police Department, confirmed that Nick Reiner was arrested Sunday in a public area near Exposition Park, close to the University of Southern California campus.
When asked whether Reiner was under the influence of drugs at the time of his arrest, McDonnell said he could not provide that information. Reiner has previously spoken publicly about his struggles with addiction.
Questions of Mental Health and Evidence
During the press conference, Hochman declined to speculate on whether mental illness played a role in the case, saying that any relevant evidence would be presented in court. He also refused to comment on whether Reiner admitted to the alleged crimes, noting that such details are part of the judicial process.
Hochman stressed that “charges are not evidence” and urged the public to rely on verified information rather than speculation or hearsay as the case proceeds.
Family Considerations and Next Steps
Hochman described Rob Reiner as an “iconic force in our entertainment industry” and Michele Singer Reiner as an “equally iconic photographer and producer.” He added that, as in any case, prosecutors would take the thoughts and wishes of the family into consideration.
Prosecutors are filing the charges Tuesday afternoon. Reiner is currently undergoing medical clearance, which officials described as a routine procedure. He will then be brought to court for arraignment, where he will formally enter a plea.
At present, Nick Reiner is being held without bail as the legal process moves forward.
