A devastating explosion at a nursing home in Bristol Township, just outside Philadelphia, killed at least two people on Tuesday and caused a major section of the building to collapse. The blast triggered intense flames, heavy smoke, and left multiple residents trapped inside as emergency teams rushed to the scene.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro stated during a press briefing that first responders risked their lives to evacuate residents and staff, working through thick smoke, strong gas fumes, and even a second explosion. Rescue crews remained on site for hours, continuing operations late into the evening.
Fire officials reported that teams were still in “rescue mode” more than five hours after the initial blast. Responders used specialized equipment including search dogs, sonar, and earth-moving machinery while also digging by hand in hopes of locating survivors.
The incident occurred at Bristol Health & Rehab Center, where a utility crew had reportedly been investigating a possible gas leak shortly before the explosion. Governor Shapiro emphasized that early findings suggesting a gas-related cause remain preliminary.
A large plume of smoke could be seen rising from the nursing home as emergency units from across the region assisted in the response effort. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, and the total number of injured individuals remains unknown.
Bristol Township Fire Chief Kevin Dippolito confirmed that five people were still unaccounted for, although he noted that some may have left the scene with relatives before being documented.
Governor Shapiro urged residents across Pennsylvania to keep the affected families in their thoughts, especially during the holiday season, saying many will now face Christmas with “an empty chair at their table.”
Officials stated that rescue and recovery operations will continue until every individual is accounted for.
