Chicago – December 27, 2025

Israel has officially recognized Somaliland as an independent state, marking a groundbreaking but contentious diplomatic move. The announcement, made by Israel’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday, establishes full diplomatic ties with the self-declared republic in the Horn of Africa. Somaliland, which broke away from Somalia in 1991, has long sought international recognition but remains unacknowledged by most countries and the United Nations.

Israel’s recognition drew swift backlash from several nations, including members of the Arab League, the African Union, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, who rejected the move as a violation of Somali sovereignty. Somalia’s government also condemned Israel’s decision, calling it “an act of interference.”

Analysts say the recognition could reshape regional diplomacy, with Israel seeking strategic alliances in the Red Sea and Horn of Africa. Meanwhile, Somaliland welcomed the decision, calling it “a historic step toward global legitimacy and partnership.”
