Vladimir Putin agreed to a one-week ceasefire over freezing cold Ukrainian cities, Donald Trump said on Thursday.
The US President asked Putin during a phone call to refrain from long-range attacks that have cut power and heating to much of the country.
Mr Trump told his cabinet that the ceasefire would protect Ukraine during an “ extraordinarily cold, record-setting… pile of bad weather”.
He claimed it was “very nice” that Putin had agreed to the request, adding: “We’re very happy that they did it because on top of everything else, that’s not what they [Ukraine] need is missiles coming into their towns and cities.”
The Ukrainian capital has been plunged into a humanitarian crisis this winter.
Russia has repeatedly hammered the energy grid in an attempt to force the population into submission by leaving millions without access to light, heating and water.
