The Trump administration has temporarily paused immigrant visa appointments at U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide, adding to a growing series of immigration restrictions. The State Department says the pause is intended to allow consular officers to undergo new training focused on screening applicants, including whether they may become dependent on U.S. public assistance.Â
Scheduled immigrant-visa interviews are being canceled or rescheduled, but the government has not announced when normal processing will resume. The move is expected to disrupt applicants who have already spent months or years navigating the immigration process.Â
The pause comes days after a federal judge struck down a separate Trump administration policy that had suspended immigrant-visa processing for citizens of 75 countries, including Pakistan, ruling that the policy exceeded the Secretary of State’s legal authority.Â
The latest action is part of a broader immigration crackdown that has included stricter visa screening, social-media checks, visa bonds and plans to revoke up to 200,000 tourist and business visas held by people who later sought asylum in the United States.Â
The result: thousands of prospective immigrants worldwide now face uncertainty over when their visa interviews and applications will move forward.
