President-elect Donald Trump is trying to stop his sentencing through the Supreme Court. He was found guilty of making false statements in his business records and is supposed to be sentenced on January 10. Trump says he did nothing wrong, and his lawyers are fighting the decision.
Trump’s team says that the case against him is not fair and is calling it a “witch hunt” by the people who are against him. They believe that because he was just elected president again, the courts should not proceed with sentencing.
A judge in New York did not agree to delay the sentencing, so Trump’s lawyers went to the Supreme Court. They hope the Supreme Court will say that Trump can’t be sentenced while they are still trying to appeal the case.
Trump’s spokesman, Steven Cheung, said that Trump wants to unite the country and focus on making America great again. They are waiting to see if the Supreme Court will help Trump by stopping the sentencing while they continue to fight the charges in court.
New York has to file a written response by Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
The filing to the United States Supreme Court comes after a judge in New York on Tuesday denied Trump’s motion to stay the Jan. 10 sentencing, which is currently set for Friday, Jan. 10 at 9:30 a.m.
