Chicago – January 16, 2025

President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team has reportedly asked three senior diplomats to step down from their positions, according to Reuters. The diplomats—Dereck Hogan, Marcia Bernicat, and Alaina Teplitz—play key roles in managing the State Department’s staff and operations.

This move suggests the Trump administration may be planning significant changes within the department. A U.S. official, speaking to Reuters, expressed concern about the decision, saying it could pave the way for more drastic measures.

All three diplomats named in the report have served under both Democratic and Republican administrations. Unlike political appointees, career diplomats typically continue their roles regardless of presidential changes. However, this request aligns with Trump’s past criticisms of the “deep state” and his goals to reshape the government.

Trump’s team defended the decision, stating that it is necessary to have officials who align with the president’s vision.

This decision highlights Trump’s focus on making sweeping changes as he prepares to take office.
