Trump Proposes Denuclearization Talks with US Adversaries
President Donald Trump has proposed “denuclearization” talks with US adversaries, Russia and China, in a bid to reduce nuclear arms and expenses. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump expressed his desire to explore possibilities of denuclearization, citing the enormous costs and destructive capacity of nuclear weapons ¹.
Trump suggested that talks between the US, Russia, and China could lead to a major breakthrough in US relations with the two global adversaries. However, concerns remain about whether these nations can be trusted to uphold their end of the deal. Russia has previously violated the terms of the New START treaty, while China has never engaged in arms reduction negotiations with the US.
The Defense Department estimates that China will soon possess over 1,000 nuclear warheads, nearly doubling its current arsenal. Trump’s proposal has sparked hopes for a new era of international cooperation on nuclear disarmament.
