Lawmakers, doctors, and advocates who support the right to choose an abortion argue that the science on the abortion pill, mifepristone, is clear. They believe the drug is safe and should be widely available with few restrictions.
In fact, even some Republican lawmakers have supported keeping access to the pill, which has become more accessible in recent years.
However, former President Donald Trump has not yet made a clear decision on his stance regarding mifepristone. Early in his presidency, he took actions to stop taxpayer money from being used for abortion services but has not publicly committed to any new restrictions on the pill.
Dr. Christina Francis, head of the American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs, expressed concern over the safety of mifepristone. She pointed to the deaths of Amber Thurman and Candi Miller, which she says were caused by the medication.
Francis argues that these tragedies show the risks of the drug and that it needs more safety measures. On the other hand, pro-choice groups believe that these deaths were linked to the negative effects of anti-abortion laws, which make it harder for women to access safe procedures.
