In June 2020, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce launched the Equality of Opportunity Initiative, a national campaign aimed at addressing America’s deep racial divides. The initiative’s message emphasized that “equality of opportunity” is everyone’s business, and urged businesses to remove barriers for Black Americans and other people of color.

Then-CEO Tom Donohue stated, “We fundamentally believe that all Americans should have the opportunity to earn their success, rise on their own merits, and live the American dream.” However, just a few years later, the high-profile campaign has disappeared from the Chamber’s website, and its webpage now redirects to the home page.

According to Daniel Kinderman, a political science professor at the University of Delaware, this retreat reflects a significant shift in corporate America’s priorities. As the Trump administration dismantles diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the private sector, companies are rapidly abandoning DEI programs to avoid potential backlash.
