Chicago – February 27, 2025

US President Donald Trump has been invited to the United Kingdom for a second state visit by King Charles.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer delivered the invitation letter from the King during his trip to the White House. Sir Keir said Trump’s last state visit in 2019 was a “great success” and called this second invitation “historic” and “unprecedented.”

After reading the letter in the Oval Office, Trump said he was honored to accept the invite and looked forward to visiting the “fantastic” country. Normally, US presidents in their second term are not given a state visit but invited for tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle.

King Charles suggested meeting at either Dumfries House or Balmoral in Scotland to discuss details of the visit. Trump has a personal connection to Scotland, as his mother was born on the island of Lewis.

During a joint press conference, Trump said a trade deal between the US and UK could happen “very quickly” and might help the UK avoid tariffs he has been considering for other countries. Sir Keir added that both nations would start working on a new economic deal focused on artificial intelligence.

Sir Keir also hopes to influence Trump’s efforts to reach a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia during his visit.
