Chicago – March 02, 2025

Former President Donald Trump has been making incorrect statements about how much money the United States has spent to help Ukraine during the ongoing war with Russia.

While meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House on Monday, Trump claimed that the U.S. has given Ukraine “hundreds of billions of dollars.” He said, “We’ve spent more than $300 billion, and Europe has spent about $100 billion. That’s a big difference.” Trump later mentioned that the U.S. had spent “about $350 billion” to help Ukraine, but he did not explain where he got that number.

This is not the first time Trump has said the U.S. has spent $350 billion on Ukraine. However, official government reports show a different amount. According to Congress, the U.S. has approved about $174 billion in aid to Ukraine since Russia invaded in 2022. This money has been used not only to help Ukraine, but also to support other countries affected by the conflict and to strengthen NATO defense.

The special inspector general for Operation Atlantic Resolve, which tracks U.S. assistance to Ukraine, reports a slightly higher total of $182 billion, which includes the $174 billion approved by Congress and additional funds from various government agencies. Of that, about $83 billion has already been spent, and another $57 billion has been promised, but not yet spent.
