A Palestinian activist and former Columbia University graduate student, Mahmoud Khalil, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Saturday night. The arrest occurred at Khalil’s Manhattan residence, where ICE agents arrived and detained him without explanation.

According to Khalil’s attorney, Amy Greer, the ICE agents initially stated that they were acting on State Department orders to revoke Khalil’s student visa. However, when Greer informed them that Khalil was a permanent resident with a green card, the agents claimed they were revoking that instead.

The arrest is believed to be connected to Khalil’s involvement in protests against Israel at Columbia University. McLaughlin alleged that Khalil “led activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization.”
