Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s announcement to support a partisan spending bill has left House Democrats reeling. Schumer’s decision provides a crucial vote for Republicans, advancing the bill despite widespread opposition from Democrats.
House Democrats expressed their outrage and sense of betrayal, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez calling it a “huge slap in the face.” Many Democrats had hoped their Senate counterparts would stand united against the GOP spending bill, which all but one House Democrat voted against earlier.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal warned that giving in on this spending bill would set a precedent for future compromises. “If we give in on this, we’re going to give in on a whole bunch of things,” she said.
Schumer defended his decision, stating that a government shutdown would be a worse option than passing the GOP’s spending bill. However, some House Democrats vehemently disagreed, with Rep. Joe Morelle saying, “I think they’re going to rue the day they made this decision.”
