President Donald Trump has been talking for weeks about April 2 being “Liberation Day,” when he plans to announce a new tariff plan to support his economic goals. However, the details of this plan have been unclear, with the president and his administration offering different ideas that have often changed.
Now, we have a little more information about what to expect. On Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that Trump will announce his tariff plan during his first Rose Garden press conference of his second term on Wednesday, April 2. The cabinet will be present for the announcement.
“Wednesday will be Liberation Day in America, as President Trump has called it,” Leavitt told reporters. “The President will unveil a tariff plan to address unfair trade practices that have hurt our country for years. This is in the best interest of the American worker.”
Leavitt did not give many specifics about the tariff plan but suggested that the president might announce reciprocal tariffs, where the U.S. would match other countries’ tariffs dollar for dollar.
She also mentioned high tariffs some countries place on American products, such as a 250% tariff Canada has on U.S. dairy products. However, she pointed out that these high tariffs are often not enforced because the countries that set them import very little from the United States.
