A Controversial ConfirmationReshaping the Justice Department

The U.S. Senate narrowly confirmed Todd Blanche as attorney general on August 8, 2026, in a 50-49 vote that cements his leadership of a Justice Department increasingly aligned with President Donald Trump’s political agenda. Blanche, Trump’s former personal lawyer, now permanently heads the department after serving as acting attorney general since April following the dismissal of Pam Bondi.

A Controversial Confirmation

Blanche’s confirmation came after weeks of standoff with Republican senators concerned about his independence from the White House. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana provided the deciding vote after securing Blanche’s written agreement to end a controversial $1.8 billion fund linked to Trump and limit a tax-immunity deal. Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski opposed the nomination, citing concerns about the department’s politicization.

Reshaping the Justice Department

Under Blanche’s leadership, the Justice Department has pursued investigations into Trump’s political critics, prompted mass departures of career prosecutors, and declared it serves at the president’s direction—a break from longstanding norms of independence. Critics argue Blanche has transformed the department into a vehicle for Trump’s retribution campaign, while supporters praise his commitment to law and order.

In a statement following his confirmation, Blanche said he was “deeply honored” to serve as the nation’s 88th attorney general.
