Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears of Virginia could make history next year by becoming the first Black woman to be elected governor in the U.S. She would also be Virginia’s first female governor. However, in a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Sears made it clear that she’s not running just to make history.
Instead, she wants to “leave it better than I found it” and ensure everyone has the same opportunities she had.
Sears was born in Jamaica and moved to the U.S. at the age of six. She served in the Marines and was a state lawmaker before becoming Virginia’s first female lieutenant governor three years ago. She is supported by popular Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, who cannot run for re-election due to Virginia’s law limiting governors to one term.
In the past, Sears has been critical of former President Donald Trump, calling him a liability after his supported candidates lost in the 2022 midterm elections. She also said she would stay neutral in the 2024 GOP presidential race.
However, she changed her mind after the attempted assassination of Trump in July, deciding to support him again. Sears emphasized that she is a Christian first and a Republican second, focusing on serving the people, not on politics.
