The United States has carried out a series of airstrikes on Houthi rebel targets in Yemen, citing the group’s attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. President Donald Trump stated that the strikes were in response to the Houthi rebels’ “piracy, violence, and terrorism” which have cost “billions of dollars” and put lives at risk .

The Houthi-run health ministry reported that at least 31 people were killed and 101 others injured in the strikes. The group, which is backed by Iran, vowed to respond to the US airstrikes.

The airstrikes targeted areas in Sanaa, the Yemeni capital, and the northern province of Saada, a stronghold of the Houthi rebels. Unverified images showed plumes of black smoke over Sanaa’s airport, which includes a military facility.

The Houthi rebels blamed the US and the UK for the airstrikes, calling them “wicked” aggression targeting residential areas. However, the UK did not participate in the airstrikes but provided routine refueling support to the US.
