West Bengal Tensions Rise Over Waqf Act Protests
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of inciting violence during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The protests turned violent in Murshidabad district, resulting in stone-pelting, arson, and road blockades. The situation escalated to the point where prohibitory orders were issued, and internet services were suspended.

BJP’s Accusations
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari claims that Banerjee’s opposition to the legislation encouraged radical elements to act violently. He also accuses the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of failing to protect Hindus and alleges that Banerjee is targeting the Hindu community. BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar further accuses Banerjee of trying to create a “Bangladesh” in West Bengal.

Mamata Banerjee’s Response
In response, Mamata Banerjee has called for calm and reiterated her opposition to the Waqf legislation, stating that it was made by the central government. She has warned of legal action against those inciting unrest and emphasized the importance of humanity and harmony.

Different Perspectives

- TMC’s Response: Mamata Banerjee’s government maintains that they are committed to maintaining peace and harmony, while opposing the Waqf Act due to its perceived implications.
