Chicago – March 08, 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump intensified his push for election reforms on March 8, 2026, threatening to withhold his signature from any other bills until Congress enacts the SAVE America Act.

In a Truth Social post from his Doral, Florida, golf resort, Trump declared, “I, as President, will not sign other Bills until this is passed.” The Republican-backed measure, which cleared the House in February by a 218-213 vote, mandates proof of citizenship—like a passport or birth certificate—for voter registration, photo ID at polls, and criminal penalties for non-compliant election officials.

Democrats decry it as voter suppression, warning it could disenfranchise millions lacking easy document access. Facing a Senate filibuster hurdle needing 60 votes, the bill’s fate is uncertain despite GOP control; Trump recently floated an executive order alternative.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune supports it but opposes filibuster changes. Trump’s ultimatum risks stalling unrelated priorities ahead of November midterms.
