The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is increasingly bold in its cyberattacks and spying efforts on the United States, especially targeting America’s telecom networks. Recent reports revealed that Chinese hackers, backed by the government, successfully breached several major U.S. cellular network providers. They accessed real-time phone calls, text messages, and sensitive data of millions of Americans.
Federal officials have described this as a large-scale cyber espionage operation that is still ongoing. Hackers have reportedly targeted high-profile political figures, including President-elect Donald Trump, Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, and even members of Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign. Although the full extent of the breach remains unclear, it is likely that private citizens’ communications were also compromised.
Experts warn that these cyberattacks are part of a larger strategy by China to gather intelligence and prepare for future cyber warfare on U.S. infrastructure. In response, many are calling for stronger measures from Congress and the incoming Trump administration to punish China and deter further espionage.
Suggested actions include imposing tougher sanctions on Chinese officials responsible for human rights abuses, such as the genocide against the Uyghur population. The U.S. should also target China’s top national companies, which are crucial to the CCP’s power, and expose the personal wealth and actions of Chinese leaders.
Additionally, experts stress the need for the U.S. to improve its own cyber defense systems. Currently, America’s system for notifying companies about cyber threats is slow and outdated, and stronger rules should be put in place to ensure companies protect their customers’ data.
In short, swift action is needed to protect America from further cyber intrusions by China.
