The Trump administration has given Columbia University an ultimatum: implement strict controls over its Middle Eastern, South Asian, and African Studies Department and make significant changes to student discipline standards, or risk losing a portion of its federal funding.
In a letter dated March 13, federal officials demanded that Columbia place the department under “academic receivership” for at least five years. This means the university administration would take control of the program. The letter also requires Columbia to create a plan for the receivership by March 20.
Columbia University has faced criticism for its handling of antisemitism on campus, particularly after pro-Palestinian demonstrations last spring. The Trump administration has already canceled $400 million in federal grants and contracts to the school, citing its failure to address antisemitism.
A Columbia University spokesman said the school is reviewing the letter and remains committed to addressing all forms of discrimination and hatred on campus.
