On Monday, Congress workers clashed with police outside the party office in Lucknow. They were trying to help their leader, Ajay Rai, leave for Sambhal.
The Uttar Pradesh government had placed strict restrictions on the area after violent protests on November 24. Rai, who is the state’s Congress president, wanted to visit Sambhal for a fact-finding mission. However, police stopped him and other party members from leaving.
During the confrontation, party workers shouted slogans and tried to break through the barricades set up by the police. Rai took the driver’s seat in his car, but was unable to drive out. After the scuffle, he got out of the car and joined his supporters in sitting on a protest outside the office.
The Congress party criticized the actions of the BJP government, calling them “anti-democratic” and accusing the government of hiding its failure. Rai, who had spent the night at the office with party workers, said that the delegation would visit Sambhal once the restrictions were lifted. He promised that the Congress delegation would travel to Sambhal as soon as they were allowed to.
