In a surprising political development, Donald Trump has won the majority of votes in Dearborn, Michigan, a city known for its large Arab-American population. This is notable because Dearborn has not favored a Republican presidential candidate heavily since the year 2000. Many local residents believe Trump made significant efforts to secure their votes.
The city’s choice seems to be a response to dissatisfaction with how the Biden administration has handled the conflict in Gaza. Preliminary results show that 47 percent of Dearborn voters chose Trump, while 27 percent voted for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, and 21 percent supported Jill Stein of the Green Party.
According to Khaled Beydoun, a law professor at the University of Detroit Mercy, this shift could be crucial for Michigan, a key battleground state. He expressed his views on social media, suggesting that the vote was largely influenced by the candidates’ positions on Gaza.
During an election night gathering at the Lava Java Hookah Lounge, supporters of Trump from the Arab American community celebrated as news came in that he was leading in Pennsylvania, another important state in the elections.
