Chicago – May 30, 2025

In early May 2025, Yati Sharma, a Delhi-based woman, was on a road trip in Uttarakhand’s Ramgarh area when she and her friend were stopped at a police checkpoint. Sharma alleges that despite complying with all traffic regulations and presenting valid documents, the officer, identified as Gulab Singh Kamboj, physically assaulted them. She claims that both she and her friend were slapped without provocation, leading to visible injuries on her friend’s face. Additionally, Sharma accuses the officer of snatching and throwing her phone when she attempted to record the encounter .

Police Response

The Nainital Police have contested Sharma’s allegations, stating that the vehicle lacked a number plate, the necessary registration documents were missing, and the pillion rider was not wearing a helmet. They assert that these violations justified the stop and any subsequent actions taken by the officer .

Counter-Evidence

In response, Sharma released additional video footage showing both riders wearing helmets and displaying the vehicle’s valid documents. She labeled the police’s version of events as “lies” and an attempt to evade responsibility .

Public Reaction and Inquiry

The incident has ignited a firestorm on social media, with many expressing outrage over the alleged misconduct. The Nainital Police have initiated an inquiry into the matter, stating that further action will depend on the investigation’s findings .

This case underscores the ongoing concerns regarding police accountability and the treatment of citizens, particularly women, during routine law enforcement activities.
