Family Separations Under Trump’s Immigration Policy
A Honduran couple, Sanjuana and Yamil, were deported back to their home country while their 1-year-old daughter, Emma, remained in U.S. custody. This heartbreaking case highlights the harsh reality of the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy, which led to over 5,500 children being separated from their parents at the border. Some of these children were as young as a few months old.

The Impact on Families
Emma’s parents crossed the border in 2018 and were separated from their baby, who was born prematurely in the U.S. Despite being deported, Emma remained detained in Texas, sparking outrage among advocates. Immigration lawyers argue that detaining infants like Emma violates international human rights standards. Critics condemn the policy as inhumane, causing lasting trauma to families.

Reunification Efforts
While the Biden administration has worked to reunite families separated under the Trump-era policy, hundreds of children remain separated from their parents. Emma’s parents continue to fight for her return, showcasing the ongoing challenges faced by families affected by these policies.
