US Becomes Highest Tariff Country Under Trump

Fareed Zakaria, a well-known political commentator, is speaking out against former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, calling them “capricious, destructive, and dumb.” Zakaria believes that Trump’s approach to trade is outdated and hurts the US economy, damages global relationships, and fails to address modern economic challenges.

Trump imposed tariffs on China, the EU, and other trading partners, claiming they would protect American jobs. However, studies have shown that these tariffs have actually raised consumer prices, hurt US manufacturers, and triggered retaliatory measures. The US Chamber of Commerce has warned that these tariffs have cost the economy billions and jeopardized jobs.

Zakaria argues that instead of using unilateral tariffs, the US should engage in multilateral negotiations and alliances to counter China’s unfair trade practices. With Trump considering even more aggressive tariffs if re-elected, economists fear further economic damage. Zakaria’s warning is clear: Trump’s outdated trade policies risk isolating the US economically and undermining long-term competitiveness.
