Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias is making an urgent push for reform when it comes to auto insurance rates in the State of Illinois.
On Wednesday, Giannoulias launched the “Driving Change” campaign. It’s an initiative that aims to prevent insurance companies from using socio-economic data like credit scores, zip codes and age when charging people higher auto insurance rates
Giannoulias described the current auto insurance rates in Illinois as unfair and discriminatory, a system that he said unfairly penalizes drivers for things that have nothing to do with driving.
“If the purpose of auto insurance is to protect the 8.5 million Illinois motorists, it only makes sense that they’re driving records serve as the primary factor for setting their rates,” Giannoulias said.
The push from legislators comes as insurance rates for home and auto are skyrocketing in the Land of Lincoln.
In early July, State Farm announced it would be increasing homeowners insurance rates by more than 27%, which prompted Gov. JB Pritzker to call on the state legislature to find a solution.
Over the next several weeks, Giannoulias’ office will be conducting a series of town halls across the state to gather input and help inform legislation.
“I challenge these insurance companies, CEOs and others to come to these hearings and sit and listen to these stories, and then not be compelled to act and do something,” said State Sen. Ram Villivalam, a co-sponsor of the Driving Change campaign.
